The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife
by Audrey Niffenegger

Published in 2004. 560 pages.

Amazon link

It's being made into a MOVIE!

Genre: Fiction, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

My overall score: 3.75/5

What its about (from amazon.com): This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she'd known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare's childhood and meeting her as a 6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare's points of view, and so does the narration.

What I thought: It took me a long time to read this book (several months), but was well worth every minute. I was a bit confused in the beginning with the time traveling and figuring out who was where and when. It still baffles me a bit - I'm not a Sci-fi person AT ALL. However, I got past that, and grew to truly enjoy this beautiful love story. Niffenegger does a great job at sequencing the story so that you feel you have read the complete story by the end. I definitely believe that I would have gotten even more out of this book if I had read it in a shorter period of time.

Happy Birthday Poppop!

Sunday was Poppop (Cecil's) birthday... so another chance to celebrate!

He decided he wanted to eat at IHOP for his birthday meal -- kind of funny choice to me, but he really enjoyed it. While we were out, we stopped to take some fun Fall photos near a lake right by our house.

Then at home we had ice cream cake and sang Happy Birthday!

Mr. Magorium...

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

Release date: November 2007 (currently running on HBO)

Genre: Comedy, Family, Fantasy

Rated: G

Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jason Bateman

What its about: Mr. Magorium never outgrew his toys - pretty remarkable, considering the guy is 243 years old. Magorium, a lively fellow with wild hair, a pet zebra named Mortimer and a fondness for shoes, has been running Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium for the last century or so. But big changes are ahead. See, Mr. Magorium has worn out his last pair of favorite shoes, and since he bought enough to last a lifetime, he knows he's about to die, er, depart, as he puts it. So Magorium hires a stuffy accountant (whom he immediately dubs Mutant) to determine what his store is worth and prepares to hand the whole thing over to his day-to-day manager, Molly Mahoney.

What I thought: I loved it. And I am very picky with movies. It was perfect to watch with the girls -but has deeper meaning for adults as well. And dont be surprised if it brings a tear or two to your eye...

Second Chance

Second Chance
by Jane Green

Published in 2008. 400 pages.

Amazon link

Genre: Fiction/Womens Lit.

My overall score: 3/5

What its about (taken from amazon.com): After a terrorist attack on an Amtrak train kills 39-year-old Tom, his death serves as the catalyst for changes in the lives of four estranged schoolmates he left behind in England. Reuniting at Tom's memorial service are Holly, a former free spirit uncomfortably forced into becoming a suburban matron by her workaholic, social-climbing husband; Olivia, a lonely director of an animal shelter; Paul, a writer whose blissful marriage with his fashionable wife is marred by their inability to conceive; and Saffron, a recovering alcoholic actress secretly involved with a married Hollywood megastar. Tom's death reignites their friendship, causes them to reevaluate their lives and sends them marching toward a concluding warm fuzzy.

What I thought: I enjoyed some aspects of this book and was definitely curious how it would all turn out. One thing that really bothered me was all of the typos, spelling & grammar mistakes and inconsistencies in the story line. I almost wondered if the editor was sleeping while reading the story. And something other than a perfectly wrapped up fairy tale ending would have worked much better. I would consider this a quick, easy read if you dont need much substance.

Go Phillies!!

Many who know me well are aware that I'm not much of a sports fan. But I am surrounded by people who are true fans of all Philadelphia teams (borderline obsessed...er...Sean!) heehee So, how could we not follow along with this most awesome adventure of seeing our hometown Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series!!
I also thought it would be nice to teach the girls about this favorite American pasttime. Of course, they got to stay up way past their bedtime to see the beginning of Game 1 last night - they even sung along to the National Anthem - very cute!
Everyone wore red to school yesterday in honor of our Fightin' Phils - here are a few pics of the girls and I sporting our red!

It has been 28 years since the Phillies last won the World Series (1980)... this could be their year!! So now, we are cheering along with the rest of the Philly fans, including my fave - the Philly Phanatic!!

Let's
Go
Phillies!!!

Our Weekend in PA

I am very proud of my cousin Tommy and his fiance Kim - they moved into a new townhouse this past weekend. It is beautiful. Much bigger than their prior apartment and from what I can tell, it is a beautiful neighborhood.
The girls and I drove up to PA on Saturday - luckily the major moving was done by that point... so we just helped with unpacking, setting up and cleaning. A few of Tom's friends were there - it was nice.
Saturday evening we went to check out the new outlets in Limerick - I found some nice things there and spent too much money of course...
We just had a lazy night at home Saturday night - ordered cheesesteaks, had a few drinks and watched a movie. The girls crashed upstairs in the guest bedroom.
Sunday morning I woke up feeling pretty crappy. I took the girls to see our friends Carl & Anita & Baby Ryan for lunch. Boochy met us there and we stopped at her mom's house for a bit. Then back to Tommy's to rest before making the drive home.
It was a beautiful weekend and we look forward to our next visit with them :)
I was very bad about taking pictures - but I got a few just before we left on Sunday afternoon...

Way to go Cuz!! :)

Tips for Not Getting Sidetracked

--More helpful hints from FlyLady's Website...
Are you getting sidetracked? Do you feel like you are not making progress? This is required reading - once per week! Have you read this? - FlyLady

Did you do your "Before Bed Routine"?
The beauty of the Before Bedtime Routine is that you are one step ahead on the day.

Did you do your "Good Morning Routine"?
Our happiness depends on getting proper rest. Get up 15 minutes early and give yourself a good start with the "Good Morning Routine"!

Kitchen Tips:
If the kitchen is clean, the rest of the house is clean.
Empty dishwasher first thing upon entering the kitchen.
Always keep the sink spotless and shining.
Throw trash and recyclables away as you empty the container.
Keep a can of Comet, bottle of Windex, and cleaning towels handy
Make table clearing everyone's job.

Menu planning:
This is tough! Try this: take a calendar and list every meal you cook for a month. At the end of a month you will have a journal of what to fix. From this journal you can make out menu cards and a grocery list. Don't forget to list what you ate at the restaurants, too; that is a menu as well. Once you have the right food in your house, you are more apt to cook it. Knowing what is planned for the day helps to keep you on track.

Keep a grocery list and hi-lighter on your refrigerator. The grocery list is a list of everything you buy for the home. When you are running low just hi-light it on your list, then take the list to the grocery on your shopping day.

Paper pile ups:
Mail - often a big pile up problem! This works - the "DO IT NOW PRINCIPLE"
Go through the mail as soon as you bring it in the house.
Only open it with your calendar, cards, and garbage can at your side.
Have one place for bills. And put them there!
Have a day for paying them and stick to it.

The Laundry: Do You Know Where Your Laundry Is?
Go! Give your laundry the attention it deserves. If not you will pay later. It will grow up and get out of hand. Here are some tips:
Sorting: If we have to sort the dirty clothes it may take longer to put a load in the washer.
Washing: Only do a load if you have time to do everything: wash, dry, fold, and put away.
Drying: Always take the clothes out of the dryer the minute you hear the buzzer. This saves you from ironing.
Folding: Fold up the clothes as soon as you get them from the dryer.
Putting the clothes away: Have a place for everything.
Buy low maintenance clothing.
Buy several pair of socks that are the same color. They will match easier.
When you take off socks make sure they are right side out.

Bathroom tips:
Keep a toilet bowl brush beside the toilet
Keep Windex bottle, paper towels, and Comet handy. This means one for each bathroom.
Polish bathroom sink daily.

Bedroom Tips (for cleaning - LOL):
Get in the habit of making up the bed as soon as possible. This will keep you from going back to bed.
Feather Dust daily.

Living room / Dining room / Family room Hints:
Throw newspaper away daily.
Feather dust daily.
Straighten Cushions on the couch.
Put things away when you finish with them.
Don't take your shoes off in the livingroom.

The Car:
Keep it empty. This is hard - unload it every time you get out.
Don't eat in the car. This way you don't have trash to throw away.
Always fill up with gas.

Staying with this system.
Establish a goal and work toward it. Set a timer if you have to.
Establish a routine to your daily chores. By the time you get to the kitchen, half of your work may be done. The routine keeps you from having to think about what to do next.
Establish a new habit each month. It takes 21 day to form a habit. But for SHEs it takes 28 days.

Manic Monday #138

This is a meme I may have done before, but would like to start again - since the Ten on Tuesdays havent been very interesting lately... There is a Manic Monday Website who comes up with the questions and here are my answers:

How long does it take you to get out of bed in the morning?
Way too long - I set my alarm, then hit snooze usually twice. I hate mornings!

Do you usually sleep on one side of the bed or another?
Unconsciously I always choose the side of the bed farthest from the door. For the last 6-7 years at least, I am on the right side (if standing in front of the bed).

Something you wish to accomplish before the end of the year:
Yes, to lose about 5 lbs and exercise. I'd like to drop back down to a Size 8 by the first of the year.

Visit with our cousins

Last weekend, we were very lucky to have my cousin Karen, her husband Julio and their children here to visit. My girls adore Julian and Madeleine and they all get along so well!
One of my very favorite parts of their visit was the slow, relaxing barefoot stroll along the beach. It was wonderfully rejuvenating. Feeling the sand between our toes, listening to the waves crashing and lapping along the shore. It was just awesome. We walked along nearing sunset. In fact, people were setting up for an evening wedding on the beach. Every now and then, we need something like that to refresh us and what better way to do it then with people we love.

Mom's Birthday

Mommom, Popppop, the four girls and I went to PA to celebrate my mom's birthday a few weeks ago. Unfortunately Tim was out of town, so he missed all the fun. We met up with my two brothers Brian & Sean and Sean's wife Holly (Boochy!) at Sean's house. Then we had dinner at one of our old favorite restaurants and back to their house for yummy ice cream cake.
It was very nice to be together for my mom's special day and of course it made her very happy! Here are some pics of our fun time together...

We GHOSTED Someone Tonight!

It was so much fun!
Luckily Tim was home today, so he made some of his yummiest brownies then added cute candy 'monster faces' on top. We made a big Ghost to hang on their door and I designed a fun letter.

The girls talked about it all day and I had to prep them about being sneaky and secretive.
After dinner and dessert (of course Tim had to make some extra brownies for us to enjoy!) we drove to Kaitlyn's friend's house. All six of us got out of the car and we each walked up on their front porch to help hang the Ghost and set out their treats. Then we rang the doorbell then we ran VERY FAST back to our car (which Tim left running!)
Adding to the fun, now as we drive down the streets of our town, we check out how many Ghosts we count on people's front doors!! :)

Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets
by J.K. Rowling

Published in 2000. 352 pages.

Amazon link

Genre: Fiction, Children's Lit

My overall score: 4/5

What its about (from amazon.com): Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older)

What I thought: Once again, I definitely enjoyed this Harry Potter book - although I liked Book 1 better than Book 2 of the series. These books are enjoyable to read and they grab your interest (once again Book 1 was more of a page-turner to me than Book 2 was). I wasnt sure if my lowered interest in this book was due to the fact that I read them back-to-back, so I have decided to take a little break before starting Book 3, but definitely plan to read it before the end of the year! Of course, my opportunities to read are drastically reduced since I have started working and the girls are back in school... we'll see about those 50 books in 2008! ;)

We've been GHOSTED!

Apparently our town has a fun tradition which we have just become involved with!
Someone rang our doorbell tonight, but they were gone when we got there. We found a fun basket of treats and a note that read that we had been GHOSTED and now we have to GHOST someone else in our town within 24 hours.

There was also a big white paper ghost hanging on our front door, which we have to keep up until after Halloween.

The goal is that every house in our town will have a white ghost on their front door by Halloween. Isn't that a cute idea? I thought it was really neat. It feels special to know that someone was thinking of you too!
I happen to know who GHOSTED us because I was talking to the mom today, but it is supposed to be a surprise. The girls LOVED it!! We have already decided who we are going to GHOST tomorrow night. I typed up a fun letter and will get together a basket of treats for their surprise.
Just thought I would share this little story -- it is yet another benefit of living in a small town!
