Tips for Not Getting Sidetracked

--More helpful hints from FlyLady's Website...
Are you getting sidetracked? Do you feel like you are not making progress? This is required reading - once per week! Have you read this? - FlyLady

Did you do your "Before Bed Routine"?
The beauty of the Before Bedtime Routine is that you are one step ahead on the day.

Did you do your "Good Morning Routine"?
Our happiness depends on getting proper rest. Get up 15 minutes early and give yourself a good start with the "Good Morning Routine"!

Kitchen Tips:
If the kitchen is clean, the rest of the house is clean.
Empty dishwasher first thing upon entering the kitchen.
Always keep the sink spotless and shining.
Throw trash and recyclables away as you empty the container.
Keep a can of Comet, bottle of Windex, and cleaning towels handy
Make table clearing everyone's job.

Menu planning:
This is tough! Try this: take a calendar and list every meal you cook for a month. At the end of a month you will have a journal of what to fix. From this journal you can make out menu cards and a grocery list. Don't forget to list what you ate at the restaurants, too; that is a menu as well. Once you have the right food in your house, you are more apt to cook it. Knowing what is planned for the day helps to keep you on track.

Keep a grocery list and hi-lighter on your refrigerator. The grocery list is a list of everything you buy for the home. When you are running low just hi-light it on your list, then take the list to the grocery on your shopping day.

Paper pile ups:
Mail - often a big pile up problem! This works - the "DO IT NOW PRINCIPLE"
Go through the mail as soon as you bring it in the house.
Only open it with your calendar, cards, and garbage can at your side.
Have one place for bills. And put them there!
Have a day for paying them and stick to it.

The Laundry: Do You Know Where Your Laundry Is?
Go! Give your laundry the attention it deserves. If not you will pay later. It will grow up and get out of hand. Here are some tips:
Sorting: If we have to sort the dirty clothes it may take longer to put a load in the washer.
Washing: Only do a load if you have time to do everything: wash, dry, fold, and put away.
Drying: Always take the clothes out of the dryer the minute you hear the buzzer. This saves you from ironing.
Folding: Fold up the clothes as soon as you get them from the dryer.
Putting the clothes away: Have a place for everything.
Buy low maintenance clothing.
Buy several pair of socks that are the same color. They will match easier.
When you take off socks make sure they are right side out.

Bathroom tips:
Keep a toilet bowl brush beside the toilet
Keep Windex bottle, paper towels, and Comet handy. This means one for each bathroom.
Polish bathroom sink daily.

Bedroom Tips (for cleaning - LOL):
Get in the habit of making up the bed as soon as possible. This will keep you from going back to bed.
Feather Dust daily.

Living room / Dining room / Family room Hints:
Throw newspaper away daily.
Feather dust daily.
Straighten Cushions on the couch.
Put things away when you finish with them.
Don't take your shoes off in the livingroom.

The Car:
Keep it empty. This is hard - unload it every time you get out.
Don't eat in the car. This way you don't have trash to throw away.
Always fill up with gas.

Staying with this system.
Establish a goal and work toward it. Set a timer if you have to.
Establish a routine to your daily chores. By the time you get to the kitchen, half of your work may be done. The routine keeps you from having to think about what to do next.
Establish a new habit each month. It takes 21 day to form a habit. But for SHEs it takes 28 days.

FlyLady - October

Check out FlyLady's website for the full description and details for the October Habit.

Excerpts taken from FlyLady:
Welcome to October! This is the month of falling leaves, Halloween costumes, and a brand new habit! All month long, we are going to be working on........ Paper Clutter.

Our new habit for October is focusing on our Paper Clutter!!

1. Piles of newspapers. Instead of holding on to them so you can read when you get a chance, discard every day when the next paper comes. Try reading on-line or listening to the public Radio.

2. Baskets of unread Magazines: You can go online and find your answer if you really need it. If you have a basket of magazines that you hate to part with, it is easier if you do it on a weekly basis.

3. Junk mail: Throw it away as soon as it comes in the house.

4. Boxes of old school papers: Do you still have a box full of papers from High school or college? Get rid of this stuff. It was another life. Now for your children's papers. Not every paper is a keepsake, believe it or not.

5. Recipes: We are addicted to cookbooks and recipes. But how often do we use them.

6. Paperback books. If you have read them, pass them on to someone else.

7. Piles of unopened mail: If you have not opened it in three months, then it is probably trash.

8. Tax papers: Our tax papers fit in one manilla envelope. Our copies of the tax returns and receipts, and directions for the schedules are all in this envelope.

9. Medical records: Children's shot records are needed until they start college and sometime up until the girls become wives and mothers.

10. Paid bills receipts. We only keep insurance receipts and tax deductible canceled checks. All the others I have a check to prove that I have paid them.

11. Old Phone books. Get rid of these.

12. CATALOGS: There are many online catalogs. Don't hold on to these.

13. Bank statements: We balance them and toss them.

14. File Cabinets full of who knows what! We need to go through these files, and toss.

15. Family pictures: Some people have drawers full of pictures that are unlabeled. My Mom did one thing that was very nice. She had a scrapbook for each of our family members. Don't start doing this until all your clutter is under control.

16. Birth Certificates/Marriage Certificate/Passports/Death Certificates/Divorce papers/Savings bonds. These all need to be protected in a fire proof safe or a bank lock box.

17. Purses full of STUFF: Each week clean out your purse. Most of what is in there is trash. You might even find some money. I clean out my purse on Fridays.

18. Maps: Get rid of them. Buy you a new one for your state.

19. Travel Brochures: Get rid of them the prices are out dated as well as the phone numbers. Make a list of the place you would like to see and look them up on the internet.

20. Organizational Books: Put your Org books away. There is no way you can follow several programs at one time. Pick one and stick to it.

21. Computer printouts from FlyLady and other websites: Don't print, file it in the computer.

Hidden Paper Clutter
We all have hidden paper clutter. We are notorious for our stash and dashes when company has surprised us with a visit. We also have those ancient filing cabinets that are so full that the drawers do not close well. Right now they are unusable because they cannot hold another piece of paper and it would be difficult to find something we were looking for.

We have to know what to keep and how to get rid of what we don't need to keep.

1. Keep copies of Tax Returns and the receipts that correspond with the deductions.

2. Other papers you will need to hold on to are deeds, car titles, birth certificates, death certificates, baptismal records, shot records and other medical records, passports, marriage certificates, divorce papers, separation agreements, custody agreements, stocks, bonds, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, savings account records and saving bonds.

3. Instruction manuals for the appliances and equipment that you own. Along with them a copy of the receipt of purchase; we can get into the habit of stapling this in the back of the manual along with the warranty. Once a year we need to go through this folder and discard any manual for equipment that we no longer have.

These three categories will only fill about a half of a file drawer in a cabinet. So how in the world are you going to get rid of all the rest of the paper that is in that room you try to use as an office?

ONE PILE AT A TIME! The first thing you have to do with this hidden clutter is make the decision that you are going to get rid of it. Then you will need a way to dispose of the paper.

FlyLady

Our house is out of control. Since going back to work, I am struggling to stay on top of cleaning, meals, laundry, bills, shopping, etc etc. I would cringe if someone knocked on the door...
A few years ago, I heard about a program called Flylady that several other triplet moms used to get themselves organized. It is a free website where you sign up and receive emails with daily tips. But also - they have a comprehensive website that has helped me create things such as packing lists, grocery lists, things to do before vacation, and things like that. I never officially 'joined' to receive the emails, but visited their website occasionally and learned a lot. Well, now I am at a point that we need to do SOMETHING DRASTIC, so I have decided to move forward and learn more about the Flylady program.
I am posting this here, hoping that you will all be my cheerleaders and hold me accountable for coming up with a program that works. It is my goal to be organized by the holidays. Remember, I am very list-oriented. I like things to be structured, scheduled, with a system in place. So - that's my plan!
To get started, I found a list for the first 31 days HERE on FlyLady's website.

Check out that link to see the complete info - I have just listed a basic overview here. I will continue to post helpful hints and lists that I find on their site.

Day 1 - Go shine your sink
Day 2 - Get dressed to lace up shoes (hair & makeup)
Day 3 - Do what we have already done
Day 4 - Write these things down
Day 5 - Write down what you hear (negative thoughts)
Day 6 - Hot Spots! A Hot Spot is an area, when left unattended will gradually take over. When you walk into a room, the hot spot is the first thing you see. CLUTTER ATTRACTS CLUTTER. Do you have areas like this that continue to grow if left alone? Does the rest of the family see this as a place to put things when they do not want to put them where they belong? Get rid of that pile, find the surface underneath, and stop the Hot Spot from becoming a raging Clutter inferno!
Day 7 - Pick out your clothes - Tonight before you hop in bed; I want you to pick out what clothes you are going to wear tomorrow.
Day 8 - Get a 3-ring binder and put paper in it - Today I want you to find an old three ring binder and just put some paper in it. Then at the top of one page write Morning Routine and on the top of another page write Before Bed Routine all in pencil. This is a working document; do not allow your perfectionism to interfere with the process. Now you can write your simple routines on each page.
Day 9 - Declutter a few minutes at a time
Take 15 minutes each day to declutter an area, You cannot organize clutter - you can only organize the things you love!

I've included my tips on how to declutter. Put your home on a diet.

When to Declutter: Decide how often you are going to declutter a zone. Do a little every day - use a timer. But be warned - this can become compulsive! Once you get started you will want to clean like a banshee! Don't burn yourself out! Only do small amount at a time. The house did not get dirty overnight and it will not get clean overnight. When you set the timer you can only do two sessions at a time. This goal may seem unattainable right now, but you can do it in little pieces. In a couple of months, the whole house will be decluttered.

Decluttering Equipment: You will need garbage bags, boxes, magic markers, and a dust rag. Label the boxes "Give Away", "Throw Away", and "Put Away". Line the "Throw Away" box with a plastic garbage bag.

Set your timer: for 1 hour (or 30, 15, or 10 minutes - it doesn't matter how long). Just do the job as fast as you can and do not pull out more stuff than you can put away in that length of time. This means just one drawer, one closet (or even one shelf in one closet), one magazine rack, or digging under just the furniture in the zone. Not all of them at once!

Start at the entrance to the room: Then, work your way around the room clockwise. Do not skip a spot. Whatever happens to be next, just do it.

Declutter Away! With boxes at your feet and dust rag in your waistband, start off by cleaning out and getting rid of the things that do not belong in this room. Put garbage in the "Throw Away" box, donations in the "Give Away" box, and stuff that goes somewhere else in the "Put Away" box. Don't worry that you do not have a place for everything right now. By the time you finish you will. That's a promise from FlyLady!

What to declutter? Things to ask yourself as you get rid of your clutter:
Do I love this item?
Have I used it in the past year?
Is it really garbage?
Do I have another one that is better?
Should I really keep two?
Does it have sentimental value that causes me to love it?
Or does it give me guilt and make me sad when I see the item?

Cleanse this room of everything that does not make you SMILE.

Get rid of the garbage! When the "Throw Away" box gets full, pull out the garbage bag, close it, and put it in the trash can, the pickup truck, or wherever you keep your garbage. Put a new garbage bag in the "Throw Away" box and keep on Flying until the timer goes off.

Donations: When the "Give Away" box gets full, seal it off, and put it in your car. The next time you are out, you can donate to the area thrift shop. Do not save your clutter for a yard or garage sale, you will be blessed by giving it away. The value can be deducted on your income tax. Remember you are trying to get rid of clutter - not relocate it somewhere else in your home. Now, grab another box, label it "Give Away", and get back to work.

"Put Away" Stuff: When the "Put Away" box gets full, take the box in your arms and run around the house (good thing you have shoes on - right?) and put the items in the room where they belong. If they have a place, put them there, if not put them in the room where they logically belong. By the time you have finished you will have a place for everything and everything will be in it's place.

Timer Goes Off: When the timer goes off, you have to put away all the boxes, but first you have to empty them all. Go as fast as you can.
Day 10 - You can do anything for 15 minutes - This is all about getting started and giving ourselves permission to stop when the timer goes off. You cannot restart the timer either. This is not a race to finish in 15 minutes either! The timer helps to keep us focused on what we are doing.
Day 11 - Add an inspirational page to your control journal - writing down some of your favorite inspirational phrases. Write them down when you see something that touches your heart.
Day 12 - Delete all the emails from FlyLady
Day 13 - Pick one of Kelly's missions and do it - Hunting dust bunnies, diving for treasures between your sofa cushions, "unmentionables" from under beds, closets, and dressers. Each day during the week, Kelly will add a new mission for whatever zone we are working in.
Day 14 - Read an essay that Kelly wrote (on website)
Day 15 - Make your bed - every morning when you wake up
Day 16 - Read an email from FlyLady - look in your inbox for an email from me. It can be a Morning Musing, a testimonial or an essay. Just take a few minutes and read over it. You never know what I am going to discuss.
Day 17 - Set a specific bedtime and stick to it
Day 18 - Read FlyLady's 11 Commandments (print & write in Control Journal)
