Earth Day - Tuesday April 22

This Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day, which has been a special day since 1970 - 38 years and counting!

Check out the official Earth Day website!

Another fun site with Earth Day ideas.

Here are ways you can encourage your kids to go green during Earth Day:

Reduce electricity - Appliances like DVD players use energy even when off, so cutting the power totally is the only way to conserve.

Shut off the water when brushing teeth

Walk, ride a bike or take the bus instead of traveling by car

Save water by decreasing your shower time, or take a bath, which uses less water than a shower.

Hang clothes on the line instead of putting them in the dryer

Choose products that are not over packaged

Recycle – junk mail, cell phones, paper products, plastic bags, and more.

Do a donation tour - Real-life examples will teach kids that many items they would normally throw away can actually have a second life.

Write a letter - Talk about how you live in a democracy and every voice counts, no matter how small.

Switch from paper and plastic bags to reusable bags and totes.

Do a project - If your child has an independent research project coming up at school, suggest she tackle an environmental issue like pollution, garbage or energy.

Enjoy the earth - Kids have to love the world to want to protect it. So take nature walks and look at the trees, flowers and sky. Encourage them to take pictures, draw pictures, read books and write stories about the world and its beauty.

Talk about it - children must understand why we’re doing these things and what impact they might have.

Opt for direct deposit, online banking, and paperless statements to reduce your paper usage.

Try your hand at composting (planting scraps from fruits, veggies, and coffee grounds outside), which will help create better soil and less landfill waste.

Don’t purchase disposable water bottles, but rather use recyclable (and refillable) beverage containers that you can fill with filtered water.

Don’t use plastic storage containers, and definitely do not heat food within a plastic container in the microwave.

Use rechargeable batteries -- Duracell now has a line of pre-charged rechargeable batteries!

Purchase used items from thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and more.

Rent movies and borrow books, instead of purchasing.

Select products made of recyclable materials.

Buy groceries in bulk, as it reduces packaging and the number of trips you take to the grocer.

Purchase locally produced food at farmer’s markets and even road-side stands.

Purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, instead of jarred, canned, or frozen.

Purchase organic foods, as they don’t contain pesticides and harmful chemicals, in addition to organic cotton.

Select soy or beeswax candles, instead of paraffin candles.

Use healthy and environmentally friendly cosmetics, such as mineral-based cosmetics and natural bath products.

Plant a tree.
