Top 3 perform:
David Archuleta, David Cook & Syesha Mercado will each perform 3 songs tonight. One is the judges choice, one is the producers choice and a song of their own choice.
Judges' song choices--
1 (a) David Archuleta: And So It Goes (Billy Joel) -Paula's choice: David looked really nice tonight, much more grown up (as grown up as a 16-yr old can look!) This was obviously a good choice of song for him and he did a really nice job with it. He hit all of the ranges in the song and I like the soft tone of his voice. It would have been nice if he played the piano while singing. All 3 judges liked his performance. Simon said it was good, not great and predictable.
2 (a) Syesha Mercado: If I Got You (Alicia Keys) -Randy's choice: Syesha looked really nice tonight in a gold glittery gown. Of course she is not one of my favorite singers and I didn't care for the song. But she did a nice job with it.
3 (a) David Cook: First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack) -Simon's choice: Hmm, I thought it was a strange song choice because it is so out of line with how David C. normally sings. But I understand Simon was trying to push him out of his comfort zone and see how he could branch out. And he DID IT! It was excellent. That raspy-sounding voice is awesome.
Singers' song choices--
1 (b) David A: With You (Chris Brown) What an interesting song for David to choose for himself. His reasoning was that he wanted to sing something more modern. Oh my. I think the pressure is getting to him. He just acts so awkward on stage when he's not singing. Right in the beginning, he got a bit mixed up and it seemed to throw him off course for the next few lines. But by mid-song he got back on track. And overall it sounded good. Simon said he was a Chihuahua trying to be a Tiger. heehee, that was funny!
2 (b) Syesha: Fever (Peggy Lee) She sounded nice and showed a nice range in her voice. Paula said it was not the right song choice and Simon called it a lame caberet performance.
3 (b) David C: Dare You to Move (Switchfoot) Awesome song choice! I like this song and he did well with it. At a few points, he seemed off-key though. The ending was the best. The judges didn't care for it and Simon said of all 3 singers, they are lucky there is a third chance to sing tonight.
Producers' Song choices--
1 (c) David A: Longer (Dan Fogelberg) This was my favorite performance of David A's for the night. There was nothing spectacular, but it sounded really nice. Simon called the song gooey...lol!
2 (c) Syesha: Hit Me Up (Gia Farrell) I thought this was a decent performance by Syesha. Her voice sounded nice but I think she seems more geared toward Broadway-type singing. Paula said it wasn't good enough to get into the finals.
3 (c) David C: I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Aerosmith) It was an interesting arrangement of the song. Nice to see it performed a different way so it didn't sound like a copycat. David C definitely was the best overall singer of the night. The judges basically welcomed him into the finals.
Tomorrow night, Syesha will go home. The finals will be David vs David. And as of tonight, I believe David Cook will win it all next week...and he deserves it!
